Parents with learning difficulties form an underserved needs group whose numbers are steadily increasing as a result of deinstitutionalisation, community care and the acceptance of the principle of normalisation. This paper presents a case study of one such family in order to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of current service responses to parents, the inhibiting as well as the enabling character of the support offered, and the importance of the values and attitudes that inform practice. It concludes with a detailed 'service audit' of the case.
